Special ASL Certifications
American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters acquire various certifications through specific educational and testing processes. The main certification awarded to ASL interpreters is the National Interpreter Certification (NIC). There is a rigorous National Interpreter Certification (NIC) certification test given jointly by the National Association of the Deaf and the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) .
Once the test is passed, a NIC certification is issued to the ASL interpreter. The testing structure has morphed over the last 25 years. Each time a major change has been made to the testing process, the title and acronym associated with the testing has been changed. Each of these are still recognized by RID as being Nationally Certified. The individual Certification titles and acronyms associated with them are listed below and have been adapted as the testing has been modified.
National Interpreter Certification (NIC): Test results used are broken down into three classification levels: Generalist, Advanced & Master.
Certificate of Interpretation or Certificate of Transliteration (CI/CT)
Specialist Certificate: Legal (SCL)
Certified Deaf Interpreters (CDI)
Comprehensive Skills Certificate (CSC)
In addition to the NIC Certification, there are specific state and industry certifications that fall into these two main areas: Legal & Medical. These are for specific industries that require special training for terminology and professionally applied protocols. The training for these is more advanced because of the extra requirements needed. The testing & certification requirements differ from state to state and by industry.

CART Services Provide Real Time Transcriptions for the Hearing Impaired
Surprisingly, many of the deaf community do not know ASL. A great alternative is Communication Access Real-time Translation (CART). CART is a technology service used for providing instant transcription of the spoken word into text form. By using high-tech stenographic machines and computer software, CART providers translate spoken word into text almost instantaneously. The text can then be displayed and viewed in several forms including a computer monitor, laptop, TV screen, or projection screen.
2 Types of CART Services
On-Site CART
An On-Site CART specialist’s job consists of setting up a stenographic machine and a laptop computer at an event attended by deaf and hard of hearing people. The CART specialist will listen to what is said and transcribe every word so that it can be viewed on a computer screen, tablet, cell phone or larger overhead screen. It is seen almost as soon as it is spoken.
Remote CART
Remote CART is very similar as onsite CART except the provider is in a remote location and listens to an event using an internet connection’s WIFI, telephone or Voice-Over IP (VOIP) connect. If the feed can be given to the CART specialist, remote cart is a viable option for many events. This is a great, cost-effective option when location considerations make it difficult for on-site.
Ultimately, the skill and versatility of CART specialists allow them to operate in many different types of events and circumstances, whether it be on-site or remotely.
