Harari and Ethiopia

Harari is spoken in the Harari region of Ethiopia. Ethiopia is one of the oldest countries in the world and Africa’s second-most populous nation. Ethiopia has yielded some of humanity’s oldest traces, making the area a primary factor in the origin and developmental history of humanity. The country is famous for its 1984 devastating famine as well as for its famous Olympic distance athletes, rock-hewn churches and as the origin of the Coffee bean. Ethiopia has also been known to be considered the land of Cush. The name was originally derived from the Hebrews to refer to the nations on the eastern coast of the Red Sea. However, the Bible is clear in stating that the Cush people are actually Ethiopians. Before 1996, Ethiopia was divided into 13 provinces, many derived from historical regions. Ethiopia now has a tiered government system consisting of a federal government overseeing ethnically-based regional states, zones, districts, and neighborhoods. Ethiopia is divided into nine ethnically-based administrative states and subdivided into sixty-eight zones and two chartered cities. The major portion of Ethiopia lies on the Horn of Africa, which is the eastern-most part of the African landmass. Bordering Ethiopia is Sudan to the west, Djibouti and Eritrea to the north, Somalia to the east, and Kenya to the south.

The Development of Harari

The Ge’ez script is an abugida. Each symbol represents a consonant vowel combination, and the symbols are organized in groups of similar symbols on the basis of both the consonant and the vowel. For each consonant in an abugida, there is a basic or unmarked symbol that represents that consonant followed by a default vowel, called the inherent vowel. Ethiopic has been assigned Unicode 3.0 code points between U+1200 and U+137F (decimal 4608 4991), containing the basic syllable signs for Ge’ez, Amharic, and Tigrinya, punctuation and numerals.
