Croatian as The Official Language of Croatia
Croatian language is today the official language of the Republic of Croatia and, along with Bosnian and Serbian, one of three official languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina. There is at present no sole regulatory body, which determines correct usage of the Croatian language. There is, however, an Institute for the Croatian language and linguistics with a prescription department. Judging by the patterns of the neighboring South Slavic languages, it is most likely that Croatian will remain a language of academics and not a colloquial language.
Politics and Culture in Croatia
Spoken in Croatia, the Croatian language is a South Slavic language dialectally based on the Western Stokavian dialect. Officially the Republic of Croatia, this Central European country sits at the crossroads of the Pannonian Plain, the Balkans and the Mediterranean Sea. Since the adoption of the 1990 Constitution, Croatia has been a democracy. Between 1990 and 2000 it had a semi-presidential system, and since 2000 it has a parliamentary system. The President of the Republic is the head of state, directly elected to a five-year term and is limited by the Constitution to a maximum of two terms. In addition to being the commander in chief of the armed forces, the president has the procedural duty of appointing the Prime minister with the consent of the Parliament, and has some influence on foreign policy. Croatia operates on the foundation of a stable economy, with agriculture and the service sector bringing in the largest amount of GDP growth. Croatia stands today as a tourist magnet due to the long history of notable historical figures, the fountain pen, necktie and famous white truffles.
The Standardization of the Croatian Language
The modern Croatian standard language is a continuous outgrowth of more than nine hundred years of literature written in a mixture of Croatian Church Slavonic and the vernacular language. Croatian Church Slavonic was abandoned by the mid-15th century, and Croatian as embodied in a purely vernacular literature. The Croatian language can be dated back to the 9th century and continues into history to its modern day usage through developments and milestones in political and religious strife. The standardization of Croatian language can be traced back to the first Croatian dictionary in 1595.
