China and Its New Role as a Superpower
Tourism in China has exploded wince the 2008 Olympics took the sports world by storm and the amazing spectacle of the opening ceremony wowed onlookers. At 9.6 million square kilometers, the People’s Republic of China is the world’s third or fourth largest country by total area, and second largest by land area. It holds the largest population of humans anywhere in the world and is steadily growing into a superpower with its efficient production factories. China is actively developing its software, semiconductor and energy industries to rival the U.S., including renewable energies such as hydro, wind and solar power. In an effort to reduce pollution from coal-burning plants (the Red Herring of the global warming argument), China has been pioneering the deployment of nuclear reactors, which run cooler and safer, not to mention pollute much less. Because China is at the cusp of becoming a superpower, global attention is focused on the market and economy and how it affects other major countries. China also supports a large tourist industry, with cities like Shanghai and Beijing catering to millions of international tourists per year. The success of the 2008 Olympics sent a message to the world that China is ready to lead and take its place among the most powerful nations in the world.
Cantonese: The Primary Branch of Chinese
Spoken as the primary branch of Chinese, Cantonese, like other primary branches of Chinese, is considered to be a dialect of a single Chinese language for ethnic and cultural reasons, but is also considered a language in its own right because it is mutually unintelligible with other varieties of Chinese. Like most major languages, Cantonese has several different dialects depending on the region of China. he Yuehai dialect is considered to be representative of the whole language. Guangzhou sub-dialect of Yuehai is made social standard due to its prestige. Thus, when referring to Cantonese, it may also specifically mean Guangzhou dialect. Outside China, the largest number of Cantonese speakers outside mainland China and Hong Kong are in south east Asia, however speakers of Min dialects are predominate among the overseas Chinese in South East Asia.
The Development Of Cantonese
Cantonese is also one of the main languages in many overseas Chinese communities including Australia, Southeast Asia, North America, and Europe. Many of these emigrants and/or their ancestors originated from Guangdong. In addition, these immigrant communities formed before the widespread use of Mandarin, or they are from Hong Kong where Mandarin is not commonly used.
