The Arab World covers a large amount of land stretching from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Arabian Sea, consisting of more than 25 countries and well over 300 million people. The majority adheres to a strict Islam religion, although the numbers of Christians are growing within the Arab States. Because the Arabic Language spans across so many different countries consisting of an abundance of cultures, it’s an important system of communication to understand. Traveling through the Middle East can be a culture shock to many but because much of human history originated from this geographical area, it holds an abundant amount of knowledge and cultural heritage. Should you decide to visit the Great Pyramids of Egypt, take in the beauty of the Moroccan coast or the green countryside of Tunisia, American Language Services is there to provide you with Certified Interpreters for your journey.
The Origins of the Arabic Language
Arabic is a central Semitic language related and classified among other Semitic languages such as Hebrew and Aramaic. It is the largest member of the Semitic language family, spoken by close to 300 million people as a second language and 250 million as a first. The largest concentration of Arabic speakers resides in the Middle East and North Africa. Arabic is an ancient language, derived from Classical Arabian in Pre-Islamic Arabic inscriptions dating back to the 4th century. Arabic has borrowed from many languages, including Hebrew, Persian and Aramaic and also influenced European languages such as Spanish, Portuguese and Sicilian.
The Writing System of Arabic
Derived from the Aramaic script, the Arabic alphabet bears many similarities to Coptic, Cyrillic and Greek script. Arabic, like many other Semitic languages, is written from right to left and uses several styles of script, Naskh used in print and Ruq’ah commonly used in handwriting. The use of calligraphy is still practiced today and is seen as an art form; calligraphers are held in great esteem. The cursive nature of Arabic lends itself to spectacular composition and beautiful strokes; master calligraphers are so skilled they can shape the writing into an actual form such as that of an animal or symbol.
