San Diego: Consecutive or Simultaneous Interpretation
On a daily basis AML-Global receives interpretation inquiries in San Diego. Clients need interpreters for conferences. Our ability to handle large venue events demonstrates that we are experts in providing consecutive and simultaneous interpreting. As the years pass, we have observed people as well as companies still dont have a clear idea about the difference between consecutive and simultaneous interpretation. Let us discuss consecutive and simultaneous interpretation in this article.
What is Consecutive Interpretation
It is best to choose consecutive interpreting when there is a small group of people and someone in that group needs interpreting in only one foreign language. Consecutive Interpretation can be used when a person who is speaking, says a few sentences and then pauses for the consecutive interpreter to translate what has just been said into the target language.
For instance, if you have a business meeting in San Diego or the surrounding areas including Chula Vista, Sorrento Valley, Oceanside, Carlsbad, and Escondido, in which most of the delegates are English speakers; and a Spanish speaking delegate is participating, a Spanish consecutive interpreter is needed. Other examples are a medical consultation or an interview.
What is Simultaneous Interpretation
Simultaneous interpreting occurs when the individual is speaking into a microphone in a different language and the audience is listening to what is being said in their own language through headsets. Sometimes the interpreters sit in sound-proof booths and listen to what is being said through headphones while at the same time interpreting what is being said to the target language into a microphone allowing the audience to listen through their headsets.
Some of examples of simultaneous interpreting are interpreting at a conferences, lectures, presentations or during high-profile trials in court.
In short, consecutive is stop-and-start while simultaneous is continuous.
Which type of interpreter do you need
It is obvious from the discussion in this article that the type of interpreter (and the number of them) one may need differ depending upon the type of meeting.
It is best to go with simultaneous interpreters, if the conference is large featuring keynote presentations from stage. On the contrary, if it consists of small, friendly meetings which are interactive in nature then consecutive interpreters may be the most suitable.
