Tongzhou District is a district of Beijing. It is located in southeast Beijing and considered the eastern gateway to the nation’s capital. Tongzhou was founded in 195 BC during the Western Han Dynasty under the name of Lu  County, although there is evidence for human settlement in the Neolithic. At the start of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the character Lu by which it was known was altered by the addition of water radical to become Lu. The government formally recognizes five religions: Buddhism, Taoism, Catholicism, Protestantism, and Islam (though the Chinese Catholic Church is independent of the Catholic Church in Rome).

Tongzhou is 37 km wide from east to west and 48 km from north to south, covering an area of 906.27 square kilometres which accounting for 5.55% of Beijing’s total territory and 14.3% of Beijing’s plain. Tongzhou has 11 towns and 4 communities, with a population of 870,000. Tongzhou has a long history of more than 220 years since its foundation in Xihan Dynasty. Relics unearthed in Tongzhou indicates that human beings had lived here as early as the Neolithic Age; In 195 BC, Liu Bang, the first Emperor of Xihan dynasty, set up the county here; In 25 AD, the first year of the Donghan Dynasty, the emperor Liu Xiu renamed it as Lu County; In 1151 AD, when the ruling power was the Jin dynasty, the emperor–King Hai Ling set up a new feudal province and renamed County Lu as Tongzhou since the Chinese character Tong could fully describe the importance of the Great Canal in transportation; In 1914, Tongzhou was renamed Tong County; In 1997, it was, by the State Council confirmation, renamed Tongzhou and became one of the districts in Beijing. Tongzhou is neighboured by Tianjin and Hebei province, at the core of Bo Sea Economic Circle. It is new to CBD, 13 km to International Trade Centre, 20 km to Tian’anmen Square, 16 km to the Capital International Airport, and 110 km to Tianjin New Harbour.
