A General Overview of the Nation of Kazakhstan

Kazakh is a Turkic language closely related to Nogai spoken primarily in Kazakhstan. Ranked as the ninth largest country in the world, and the largest land locked country in the world, Kazakhstan covers a large amount of territory in central Europe. Most famously parodied by actor Sascha-Baron-Cohen in the movie Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, the nation does indeed have much more to offer than what the film suggests. Kazakhstan is ethnically and culturally diverse, in part due to mass deportations of many ethnic groups to the country during Stalin’s rule. Kazakhs are the largest group, followed by Russians. Kazakhstan allows freedom of religion, and many different beliefs are represented in the country. Islam is the primary religion, followed by Orthodox Christianity. Kazakh language has the status of the “state” language, while Russian is declared the “official” language and used in everyday business.

The Kazakh Writing System

Today, Kazakh is written in the Cyrillic alphabet in Kazakhstan and Mongolia, while the more than one million Kazakh-speakers in China use an Arabic-derived script similar to that used to write Uyghur. The oldest known written records of languages closely related to Kazakh were written in the Orkhon script. However, it is not believed that any of these varieties were direct predecessors of Kazakh. Modern Kazakh has historically been written using versions of the Latin, Cyrillic and Arabic scripts.

Kazakh Phonology

Kazakh exhibits front-back vowel harmony, with some words of recent foreign origin (usually of Russian or Arabic origin) as exceptions. There is also a system of rounding harmony, which resembles that of Kyrgyz, but which does not apply as strongly and is not reflected in the orthography.
