India At The Turn of The Century and Its Artistic Influences
Hindi, spoken as the main language of India, accounts for 41% of the population of Hindi speakers in India. Home to the Indus Valley Civilization and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, India was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history; four major world religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism originated there. India is a republic consisting of 28 states and seven union territories with a parliamentary system of democracy. It has the world’s twelfth largest economy at market exchange rates and the fourth largest in purchasing power. It is consistently becoming a ‘go-to’ place for shipping jobs overseas where tedious but important work can be outsourced for cheap. India is also at the forefront of arts and music; most recently, Slumdog Millionaire has raised attention to the capabilities of India as a real presence in world entertainment. Hollywood is paying close attention to the Bollywood empire, hoping to capitalize on its success. Although major studios have tried to limited success, Slumdog Millionaire proves that a film relating to the Indian culture and community can be successful in western civilization.
The Origins of Hindi Through The Ages
Like many other modern Indian languages, Hindi has evolved from Sanskrit, by way of the Middle Indo-Aryan Prakrit languages and Apabhramsha of the Middle Ages. The Hindi language has been influenced by many Middle Eastern dialects including Arabic and Farsi. Since almost all Arabic words came via Persian, they do not preserve the original phonology of Arabic.
Devengari, The Written Script of Hindi
Devangari is the name of the script that Hindi is written in. It is written from left to right, lacks distinct letter cases, and is recognizable by a distinctive horizontal line running along the tops of the letters that links them together. Devangari is the main script used to write Hindi, Marathi, and Nepali. Since the 19th century, it has been the most commonly used script for Sanskrit and Pali.
