Bosnia, A World Treasure on the Brink of Discovery

Spoken mainly in Bosnia, The Bosnian language is a standard South Slavic language based on the Stokavian dialect. Bosnia is a diverse country, home to three ethnic peoples: Bosniaks, Serbs and Coats. There are tensions between the three constituents and tensions often arise between them. Although the history of Bosnia is scarred with war and duress, the World Tourism Organization estimates that Bosnia will have the third highest tourism growth rate in the world between 1995 and 2020. Dominance in Architecture, Literature and Visual Arts is a reason to visit Bosnia alone. The architecture of Bosnia and Herzegovina is largely influenced by 4 major periods where political and social changes influenced the creation of distinct cultural and architectural habits of the population. Bosnia’s rich history in literature and poetry include such masters as Antun Branko and Mak Dizdar. The visual arts in Bosnia and Herzegovina were always evolving and ranged from the original medieval tombstones (stecak) to paintings in Kotromanic court. Bosnia holds a world of riches to be discovered for those willing to travel and learn the national language.

The Phonology of Bosnian

Bosnian phonology follows some very common rules when it comes to its vowel system. It uses five vowels and they are all monopthongs (a single vowel articulated without change in quality throughout the course of a syllable). The phonology of Bosnian gets complicated when consonants are brought in because the consonant system is more complicated and features a series of affricate and palatal consonants influenced by Indo-European languages.

The Latin Alphabet and Bosnian

The modern Bosnian language uses the Latin alphabet. However, scripts other than Latin were used much earlier, most notably the indigenous Bosnian Cyrillic. Interestingly, the name for the language is a controversial issue for neighboring Corats and Serbs who refuse to give the language an official name. Instead they call Bosnian “Language spoken by Bosniaks,” it is the people that refuse to settle on a name for what is essentially the same language.
