The Official Language of China: Mandarin
Functioning as the official spoken dialect of China, Mandarin is the most widely spoken language in the world with 885 million speakers worldwide. Mandarin refers to the Standard Chinese and is based on a particular Mandarin dialect spoken in Beijing, the official language of China and one of the four official languages of Singapore. Like most major dialects, there is dispute as to whether Mandarin is a dialect or a language unique to itself. This has a lot to do with the present divisions of the Chinese language notably Cantonese and how the Chinese language developed out of the different ways in which dialects of Old Chinese and Middle Chinese evolved. Since Mandarin is the most widely spoken language in the world, a proper translator, native to speaking Mandarin, is essential when conducting business globally.
China and its New Role As A Superpower
Tourism in China has exploded since the 2008 Olympics took the sports world by storm and the amazing spectacle of the opening ceremony wowed onlookers. At 9.6 million square kilometers, the People’s Republic of China is the world’s third or fourth largest country by total area, and second largest by land area. It holds the largest population of humans anywhere in the world and is steadily growing into a superpower with its efficient production factories. China is actively developing its software, semiconductor and energy industries to rival the U.S., including renewable energies such as hydro, wind and solar power. In an effort to reduce pollution from coal-burning plants (the Red Herring of the global warming argument), China has been pioneering the deployment of nuclear reactors, which run cooler and safer, not to mention pollute much less. Because China is at the cusp of becoming a superpower, global attention is focused on the market and economy and how it affects other major countries. China also supports a large tourist industry, with cities like Shanghai and Beijing catering to millions of international tourists per year. The success of the 2008 Olympics sent a message to the world that China is ready to lead and take its place among the most powerful nations in the world.
Mandarin and its Similarities to English
Mandarin is similar to English in many of its syntactic characteristics. It frequently forms sentences by stating a subject and following it by a predicate. The predicate can be an intransitive verb, a transitive verb followed by a direct object, a linking verb followed by a predicate nominative, etc. Mandarin differs from English in that it forms another kind of sentence by stating a topic and following it by a comment. Mandarin differs from English in distinguishing between names of things, which can stand as predicate nominatives, and names of characteristics. Mandarin does not have tense. Instead it uses a combination of aspect markers and markers of modality.
