The Serbian Language

The Serbian language is a South Slavic language, spoken chiefly in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia, and in the Serbian Diaspora. Standard Serbian is based on the Shtokavian dialect, like the modern Croatian and Bosnian, with which it is mutually intelligible, and was previously unified with under the standard known as Serbo-Croatian.

Politics and Culture in Croatia

Spoken in Croatia, the Croatian language is a South Slavic language dialectally based on the Western Stokavian dialect. Officially the Republic of Croatia, this Central European country sits at the crossroads of the Pannonian Plain, the Balkans and the Mediterranean Sea. Since the adoption of the 1990 Constitution, Croatia has been a democracy. Between 1990 and 2000, it had a semi-presidential system. And since 2000, it has a parliamentary system. The President of the Republic is the head of state, directly elected to a five-year term and is limited by the Constitution to a maximum of two terms. In addition to being the commander in chief of the armed forces, the President has the procedural duty of appointing the Prime Minister with the consent of the Parliament, and has some influence on foreign policy. Croatia operates on the foundation of a stable economy, with agriculture and the service sector bringing in the largest amount of GDP growth. Croatia stands today as a tourist magnet due to the long history of notable historical figures, the fountain pen, necktie and famous white truffles.

Serbian Writing System

Standard Serbian language uses both Serbian Cyrillic script and Serbian Latin script (Latinica). Although Serbian language authorities recognize the official status for both scripts in contemporary standard Serbian language, due to historical reasons Cyrillic was made the Official script of Serbia’s administration by the 2006 Constitution[8]. But the law does not regulate scripts in standard language, or standard language itself by any means, leaving the choice of script as a matter of personal preference and to the free will in all aspects of life, except in government paperwork production and in official written communication with state officials.
