Dutch Language and The Netherlands as a Global Example of Liberal Opportunity

Dutch, spoken mainly in the Netherlands and worldwide by over 22 million people, is a West Germanic language and a parent language of several Creole languages. Dutch speakers reside predominantly in the Netherlands, known for its liberal views, clogs, tulips, cheese and world class cuisine. The word Dutch is used to refer to the people, the language, and anything appertaining to the Netherlands. Being one of the first parliamentary democracies, the Netherlands was a modern country at the moment of its very foundation, and it has always been open to the world. The country is more recently known for its rather liberal policies toward drugs, prostitution, homosexuality, and euthanasia. It also has one of the most free market capitalist economies in the world. This extremely accepting and open country makes the Netherlands a tourist magnet and a major player in the world economy as the 16th largest economy in the world. The Netherlands is culturally rich and has given us famous painters such as Vincent van Gogh and Escher. The influence of Dutch culture is apparent in western society because it idolizes the free spirited nature of commercialism.

Dutch Dialects

Dutch dialects are remarkably diverse. The Netherlands have quite a lot different regions and various dialects. The same applies to Flanders. A special series on Dutch dialects provides detailed information on this subject. The introduction of Standard Dutch has begun later in Flanders, because of the dominance of French up to the 1960s.

The Sounds and Stress of Dutch Language

If you're a native English speaker and you look at Dutch the words may look recognizable, in actuality, the words are markedly different through pronunciation. The rhotic pronunciation causes some English speakers to believe Dutch sounds similar to a West Country accent. Dutch is a stress language; the stress position of words matters. Stress can occur on any syllable position in a word. There is a tendency for stress to be at the beginning of words. In composite words, secondary stress is often present. Understanding the stress and where it is used is paramount to pronouncing words correctly and understanding them.
