The Amharic language is unique and has very specific origins and characteristics.

Urbanization and Infrastructure in Growing Ethiopia

The official language of Ethiopia is Amharic, a language group, which together with Old South Arabian, forms the Western branch of the South Semitic languages. Ethiopia is one of the oldest countries in the world; it has yielded some of the oldest traces of humanity, making it a candidate for the so-called “Cradle of Humanity.” Ethiopia is the only African country that has never been colonized, since the Liberian state. It holds a negative stereotype as being one of the poorest and barest of all nations, but Ethiopia has one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Population growth, migration, and urbanization are all straining both governments and ecosystems’ capacity to provide people basic services. Ethiopia certainly had a rocky past, stoked by the media as a desolate area full of starving people. While this holds true for a small party of Ethiopia, it is actually a richly diverse nation and urbanizing everyday.

Gender Specific Nouns in the Amharic Language

Like most Latin languages, Amharic nouns can have a masculine or feminine gender. There are several ways to express gender in the Amharic language. An example is the old suffix -t for femininity. This suffix is no longer productive and is limited to certain patterns and some isolated nouns. A translator well versed and native to the tongue of Amharic is essential to correctly and accurately translate any Amharic script. When someone is talking to a male or female, different endings are usually used for masculine and feminine. If you are talking to a male, the word simply ends in an ‘h’ sound. When you are talking to a female, the word ends in ‘sh’. Additionally, when you are talking to a group of people, the word ends in ‘achu’.

The Popularity of Amharic

Amharic is the official language of Ethiopia. Millions of Ethiopians who live abroad use it to communicate. The demand for Amharic language translators has increased in Australia, USA, Europe and other western countries because of the continuous migration of Ethiopians. All translators at American Language Services are native Amharic speakers and adhere to a strict policy and code of ethics to translate Amharic.
