INTERPRETING CERTIFICATIONS

FEDERAL

The Federal government has a "Federal Certified" designation and two other lessor designations which are "Professionally Qualified" & "Language Skilled". The "Certified" designations are given to interpreters who pass the verbal and written testing requirement administered by the Director of the Administrative Office of the United States Courts. For the other 2 designations, the local federal court determines on a case-by-case basis whether the prospective interpreter is either professionally qualified or language skilled.

Specific Certified Languages:

Spanish, Navajo and Haitian Creole

BY STATE

42 individual States across the U.S. have specific certification programs. The other states do not at this time. These programs are administered by each individual state or by the National Consortium of States Organization. Most States have reciprocity and will honor certification from other states.

To become Court "Certified" an interpreter must pass a difficult written and verbal test. Once the interpreters pass both areas they are then designated "State Court Certified". The following is a detailed list of the certified languages in each state.
